MENTORING PROGRAM
ICOPA is proud to announce the implementation of a cost-free professional development program available to all new Chiefs in Idaho. The New Chief’s Mentoring Program is an exciting opportunity for veteran Chiefs and new Chiefs alike.
The program matches veteran chiefs who have been trained as mentors with new incoming chiefs for up to 6 months or on a more informal basis, depending on the needs or desires of the new chief. During this time, the veteran chief provides valuable support to the new chief through a site visit, face-to-face meetings, or phone conferencing to discuss and plan for the new chief's unique challenges.
ICOPA recognizes that nobody has all the answers, and to overcome the challenge of building a network of resources that could take years, the ICOPA is creating a list of subject matter resources that are available to new chiefs. This is another opportunity where, rather than being a full-blown mentor, chiefs or command staff officers with experience in particular subject areas can be a phone call away for any new chief. Chiefs or command staff officers with experience in building projects, policy & procedure, union issues, media relations, and many more areas can volunteer to be just a phone call away and provide insight and advice for that new chief.
